Today's training included going up to around 3000 feet and practicing emergency procedures. Before I go under the hood to practice unusual attitude recovery, I was shown the descending turn and climbing turn where the attitude of the plane needed to be recovered to straight and level. These maneuvers were pretty trying on my senses but I was able to do them without getting sick, thanks to that ReliefBand.
We also discussed and performed procedures for descending through a cloud deck. Now, this isn't something that a VFR pilot should be doing. But in case of an emergency, it can be necessary. With the aid of ATC, it is possible to safely descend through clouds and land the aircraft. We practiced flying a southerly heading and using rudder to control the aircraft rather than coordinated controls. Slight changes in heading were exagerated by the compass due to it's tendency to lead in the direction of the turn, confirming a turn.
Finally, we practiced maneuvering without rudder control, using the yoke only and using only rudders to make turns, descend, and set ourselves up for a landing. By using power, trim, flaps and rudder pedals only, I was able to make a successful approach.
