Vacation '00 - Road Trip to sunny California

This year vacation will be much different than in past years.  This year we are driving to sunny California in the 97 Corvette,  a quieter, more comfortable ride than last year (in a Jeep Wrangler).  Click on the links below for a bigger image!

Days 1 through 5
Days 6 through 11
Days 12 through 15

Day 1 - September 1, 2000 - MD, PA, WV, OH

We left Maryland around 1:30pm and hit quite a bit of holiday traffic including some backed up traffic due to an accident on the PA Turnpike. Needless to say, after 7 hours of driving, we only made it to St. Clairsville, Ohio. We ran into a piece of wood that was uplifted by a tractor trailer in front of us and it came in contact with the bottom of the front bumper. The damage is hard to see with in the picture below, but there is now a 1" long scrape in the bumper.

Welcome to Ohio, our first stop.

Day 2 - September 2, 2000 - OH, IN, IL, MO, KA

We left Ohio at 5:50am.  We travelled about 800 miles today.  Traffic was considerably better than yesterday considering the holiday weekend.  We drove through quite a few cities today.  Tonight we are staying in Abilene, Kansas.  We intend to make it to California by Monday, early afternoon.  We'll see if that holds true.

Lots of police were pulling people over today.  We were lucky I guess.
The city of Indianapolis as seen from I-70.
Kansas City from I-70.
St. Louis from I-70.
We saw 35.1 MPG average today!  Not bad for a 345 HP Vette!
Wow!  Was it hot in Missouri and Kansas today!

Day 3 - September 3, 2000 - KA, CO, UT

We left Kansas at 6am CDT and continued on I-70 through the Rocky Mountains.  The weather was mostly perfect except for some unexpected showers.  Drove about 850 miles today.  We also visited Arches Nat'l Park in Utah, before staying in Price, UT.

Day 4 - September 4, 2000 - UT, NV, CA

We left Price, Utah at 6am and it was awefully cold.  The trip was the longest so far, 1000 miles with 17 hours of driving.  But, we finally got to San Jose to visit with Kirk and Tracie.

Yeah, it's cold in the desert.
Utah - Salt Lake and the salt flats.
On the way to California.

Day 5 - September 5, 2000 - California

We took some time getting on the road this morning.  Our thanks to Kirk and Tracie for letting us stay at their place last night.  We had the chance to drive through San Francisco and then drive down CA Route 1.  We are currently staying in Marina.
